How to Overcome Secondary Infertility in Women

Secondary Infertility is the term used to describe those women who are having difficulties becoming pregnant despite having previously had a child (or a pregnancy).

How do I know that secondary infertility can be overcome. I have two very active little boys to prove it. Unfortunately not everyone will be as lucky as me but you might be one of the more fortunate ones.

It took me nearly 7 years to have both of my boys – there is a four year age gap between them and I started trying for a baby when I was 30. I thought 3 years to get pregnant was hard but my second one took four years and the doctors gave me no reason why. So I hope that if you are reading this and suffering from unexplained infertility or having problems getting pregnant that you will gain some hope from my story.

Beat Secondary infertility by reducing consumption of the two m’s – meat and milk!

Eating meat and drinking milk have been associated with low sperm count in men and infertility in women. Nobody really knows why but it has been suggested that the antibiotics that are injected into the animals may be a factor.

You could try organic products but they tend to be expensive and as nobody knows why milk and meat may affect fertility, you could be wasting your money.

You can’t just give up eating these two products and not replace them with another source of protein and calcium. We all need optimum health especially when we are trying to conceive and whilst we are pregnant.

Other sources of calcium include spinach (you should be eating a lot of steamed green veggies), nuts (not the roasted salted variety!), prunes (they have other functions as well so don’t over do them or you may have to take up residence in your toilet) and sardines.

Some sources of protein include eggs (try not to use those produced by battery/caged hens as they could contain antibiotics as well), brown rice, brown pasta, chickpeas, lentils, etc

You are looking to improve your health to give your body the best chance of conceiving possible. Giving up meat and milk for a little while won’t kill you and may help you in your quest for a new baby. It is worth a try!

Secondary infertility can be just more heartbreaking than not being able to get pregnant

As the title says, secondary infertility can be just as heartbreaking as not being able to have children. In fact sometimes it can be even worse. Why?

Well, for one thing people will expect you to feel grateful that you have a healthy child and of course you do. But that doesn’t stop you wanting to give them a brother or sister.

You may start feeling guilty that they will grow up lonely. Don’t get me wrong. Of course there are parents who decide that they only want one child and there are kids out there that would prefer to be an only child!

But when you have experienced the joy of having a child and then have problems getting pregnant again, it is heartbreaking. It can lead to depression and feelings of isolation. You cannot remove yourself from the world of kids and babies as you have to bring your other child to school, the playground or park. After all it isn’t their fault that you can’t have more children and they deserve a childhood as normal as you can give them.

And you can drive yourself nuts wondering why you cannot get pregnant. Most of the time the doctors’ don’t know either. I lost count of the number of times I was told that as I obviously could get pregnant that all I needed to do was relax and it would happen.

If you are experiencing secondary infertility there are a number of things that you can do to help improve your chances. The first “obvious” one is to go to your doctor with your partner and both of you have a full medical checkup. Explain to your doctor that you want another child and don’t get sent home on the basis that you already have one. Things may have changed i.e. your partner could now have a low sperm count, your hormones could be out of sync etc. Make an appointment and get checked out. Taking control of the situation and taking action will help you in your goal of beating this condition.
